Capítulo 35
Nueva visita de Jacob a Betel
1 Dios dijo a Jacob: «Sube a Betel y permanece allí. Levanta allí un altar al Dios que se te apareció cuando huías de tu hermano Esaú».
2 Entonces Jacob dijo a sus familiares y a todos los demás que estaban con él: «Dejen de lado todos los dioses extraños que tengan con ustedes, purifíquense y cámbiense de ropa.
3 Ahora subiremos a Betel, y allí levantaré un altar al Dios que me respondió cuando estuve angustiado, y que estuvo conmigo en el viaje que realicé».
4 Ellos entregaron a Jacob todos los dioses extraños que tenían consigo y los aros que llevaban en sus orejas. Y Jacob los enterró debajo de la encina que está cerca de Siquem.
5 Cuando partieron, Dios hizo cundir el pánico entre las poblaciones vecinas, de manera que nadie persiguió a los hijos de Jacob.
6 Así Jacob llegó a Luz –o sea, Betel– en la tierra de Canaán, junto con toda la gente que lo acompañaba.
7 Allí erigió un altar, y puso a ese lugar el nombre de Betel, porque allí se le había revelado Dios, cuando él huía de su hermano.
8 Mientras tanto murió Débora, la nodriza de Rebeca, y fue sepultada bajo la encina que se encuentra antes de llegar a Betel. Por eso se la llamó «Encina del llanto».
Renovación dela promesa de Dios a Jacob
9 Cuando Jacob regresó de Padán Aram, Dios se le apareció de nuevo y lo bendijo,
10 diciéndole: «Tu nombre es Jacob. Pero en adelante no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel». Así le puso el nombre de Israel.
11 Luego añadió: «Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Sé fecundo y multiplícate. De ti nacerá una nación, más aún, una asamblea de naciones, y saldrán reyes de tus entrañas.
12 La tierra que di a Abraham y a Isaac, ahora te la doy a ti y a tu descendencia».
13 Y Dios se alejó de él.
14 Jacob erigió una piedra conmemorativa en el lugar donde Dios le había hablado. En seguida ofreció una libación sobre ella y ungió la piedra con aceite.
15 Jacob llamó Betel a aquel lugar, porque allí Dios había hablado con él.
El nacimiento de Benjamín y la muerte de Raquel
16 Partieron de Betel, y cuando todavía faltaba un trecho para llegar a Efratá, a Raquel le llegó el momento de dar a luz, y tuvo un parto difícil.
17 Como daba a luz muy penosamente, la partera le dijo» «¡No temas, porque tienes otro hijo varón!».
18 Con su último aliento –porque ya se moría– lo llamó Ben Oní; pero su padre le puso el nombre de Benjamín.
19 Así murió Raquel, y fue enterrada junto al camino de Efratá, o sea, de Belén.
20 Sobre su tumba Jacob erigió un monumento, el mismo que está en esa tumba hasta el día de hoy.
El insesto de Rubén
21 Israel siguió avanzando, y estableció su campamento más allá de Migdal Eder.
22 Mientras acampaba en aquella región, Rubén se acostó con Bilhá, la concubina de su padre, e Israel se enteró.
Los hijos de Jacob
Jacob tuvo doce hijos.
23 Los hijos de Lía fueron Rubén, el primogénito de Jacob, Simeón, Leví, Judá, Isacar y Zabulón.
24 Los hijos de Raquel fueron José y Benjamín.
25 Los hijos de Bilhá, la esclava de Raquel, fueron Dan y Neftalí.
26 Los hijos de Zilpá, la esclava de Lía, fueron Gad y Aser. Estos son los hijos que le nacieron a Jacob en Padán Aram.
La muerte de Isaac
27 Jacob llegó a la casa de su padre Isaac, en Mamré, En Quiriat Arbá –la actual Hebrón– donde también había residido Abraham.
28 Isaac vivió ciento ochenta años.
29 Al término de ellos murió, anciano y cargado de años, y fue a reunirse con los suyos. Sus hijos Esaú y Jacob le dieron sepultura.
Chapter 35
1
God said to Jacob: «Go up now to Bethel. Settle there and build an altar there to the God who appeared to you while you were fleeing from your brother Esau.»
2
1 So Jacob told his family and all the others who were with him: «Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you; then purify yourselves and put on fresh clothes.
3
We are now to go up to Bethel, and I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my hour of distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.»
4
2 They therefore handed over to Jacob all the foreign gods in their possession and also the rings they had in their ears.
5
Then, as they set out, a terror from God fell upon the towns round about, so that no one pursued the sons of Jacob.
6
Thus Jacob and all the people who were with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.
7
There he built an altar and named the place Bethel, for it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
8
3 Death came to Rebekah’s nurse Deborah; she was buried under the oak below Bethel, and so it was called Allonbacuth.
9
On Jacob’s arrival from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.
10
God said to him: «You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.» Thus he was named Israel.
11
God also said to him: «I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, shall stem from you, and kings shall issue from your loins.
12
The land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac I now give to you; And to your descendants after you will I give this land.»
13
Then God departed from him.
14
On the site where God had spoken with him, Jacob set up a memorial stone, and upon it he made a libation and poured out oil.
15
Jacob named the site Bethel, because God had spoken with him there.
16
Then they departed from Bethel; but while they still had some distance to go on the way to Ephrath, Rachel began to be in labor and to suffer great distress.
17
When her pangs were most severe, her midwife said to her, «Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son.»
18
4 With her last breath – for she was at the point of death-she called him Ben-oni; his father, however, named him Benjamin.
19
5 Thus Rachel died; and she was buried on the road to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20
Jacob set up a memorial stone on her grave, and the same monument marks Rachel’s grave to this day.
21
Israel moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-eder.
22
While Israel was encamped in that region, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine. When Israel heard of it, he was greatly offended. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.
23
The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s first-born, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
24
6 the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
25
the sons of Rachel’s maid Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali;
26
the sons of Leah’s maid Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27
Jacob went home to his father Isaac at Mamre, in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.
28
The lifetime of Isaac was one hundred and eighty years;
29
then he breathed his last. After a full life, he died as an old man and was taken to his kinsmen. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
