Capítulo 47
La entrevista de los hijos de Jacob con el Faraón
1 Luego José fue a informar al Faraón, diciendo: «Mi padre y mis hermanos vinieron de Canaán con sus ovejas, sus vacas y todo lo que poseen, y ahora están en la región de Gosen».
2 Además, él se había hecho acompañar por algunos de sus hermanos y se los presentó al Faraón.
3 Este les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿de qué se ocupan?». «Somos pastores, como también lo fueron nuestros antepasados», respondieron ellos.
4 Y añadieron: «Hemos venido a residir en este país, porque en Canaán no hay pastos para nuestros rebaños, ya que el país está asolado por el hambre. Por eso te rogamos que nos dejes permanecer en la región de Gosen».
5a El Faraón dijo a José:
6b «Pueden establecerse en la región de Gosen. Y si te consta que entre ellos hay gente capaz, encomiéndales el cuidado de mis propios rebaños».
Otro relato del establecimiento de los hebreos en Egipto
5b Jacob y sus hijos llegaron a Egipto, donde estaba José; y cuando el Faraón, rey de Egipto, se enteró de la noticia, dijo a José: «Tu padre y tus hermanos vinieron a reunirse contigo.
6b El territorio de Egipto está a tu disposición: instala a tu padre y a tus hermanos en las mejores tierras».
7 José hizo venir a su padre Jacob y se lo presentó al Faraón. Jacob saludó respetuosamente al Faraón,
8 y este le preguntó: «¿Cuántos años tienes?».
9 Jacob respondió al Faraón: «Los años que se me han concedido suman ya ciento treinta. Pocos y desdichados han sido estos años de mi vida, y ni siquiera se acercan a los que fueron concedidos a mis padres».
10 Luego Jacob volvió a saludar al Faraón y salió de allí.
11 José instaló a su padre y a sus hermanos, dándoles una propiedad en Egipto, en las mejores tierras –en la región de Ramsés– como el Faraón lo había dispuesto.
12 Y también proveyó al sostenimiento de su padre, de sus hermanos, y de toda la familia de su padre, según las necesidades de cada uno.
La habilidad administrativa de José
13 Como la escasez era muy grande, en ningún país había alimentos, y tanto Egipto como Canaán estaban exhaustos por el hambre.
14 Así José pudo recaudar todo el dinero que circulaba en Egipto y en Canaán, como pago por los víveres que compraban, y guardó ese dinero en el palacio del Faraón.
15 Y cuando ya no hubo más dinero ni en Egipto ni en Canaán, los egipcios acudieron en masa a José para decirle: «Danos de comer. ¿Por qué tendremos que morir ante tus propios ojos, por falta de dinero?».
16 José respondió: «Si ya no hay más dinero, entreguen su ganado y yo les daré pan a cambio de él».
17 Ellos trajeron sus animales a José, y él les dio pan a cambio de caballos, ovejas, vacas y asnos. Y durante aquel año los abasteció de víveres a cambio de todos sus animales.
18 Pero pasó ese año, y al año siguiente vinieron otra vez y dijeron a José: «Ya se ha terminado todo el dinero y los animales te pertenecen. No podemos ocultarte que no queda nada a tu disposición, fuera de nuestras personas y nuestras tierras.
19 Pero ¿por qué tendremos que morir ante tus propios ojos, nosotros y nuestras tierras: Aduéñate de nosotros y de nuestras tierras a cambio de pan. Así el Faraón será dueño de nosotros y de nuestras tierras. Danos solamente semilla para que podamos sobrevivir. De lo contrario, nosotros moriremos, y el suelo se convertirá en un desierto».
20 De esa manera, José adquirió para el Faraón todas las tierras de Egipto, porque los egipcios, acosados por el hambre, vendieron cada uno su campo. La tierra pasó a ser propiedad del Faraón,
21 y el pueblo quedó sometido a servidumbre de un extremo al otro del territorio egipcio.
22 Los únicos terrenos que José no compró fueron los que pertenecían a los sacerdotes, porque a ellos el Faraón le había asignado una ración fija de alimentos; como vivían de la ración que les daba el Faraón, no tuvieron que vender sus tierras.
23 Entonces José dijo al pueblo: «Ahora ustedes y sus tierras pertenecen al Faraón, porque yo los he comprado. Aquí tienen semilla para sembrar esas tierras.
24 Pero cuando llegue la cosecha, ustedes deberán entregar al Faraón una quinta parte de los productos, y conservarán las cuatro partes restantes para sembrar la tierra, para alimentarse ustedes y sus familias, y para dar de comer a los niños».
25 Ellos exclamaron: «Tú nos salvaste la vida. Te agradecemos que nos hayas puesto al servicio del Faraón».
26 Entonces José promulgó una ley agraria en Egipto –que todavía hoy está en vigencia– por la cual una quinta parte de las cosechas corresponde al Faraón. Sólo las tierras de los sacerdotes no pasaron a ser propiedad del Faraón.
La última voluntad de Jacob
27 Los israelitas se establecieron en Egipto, en la región de Gosen, y allí adquirieron propiedades, tuvieron muchos hijos y llegaron a ser muy numerosos.
28 Jacob vivió diecisiete años en Egipto, y en total vivió ciento cuarenta y siete años.
29 Cuando estaba a punto de morir, llamó a su hijo José y le dijo: «Si realmente me tienes afecto, coloca tu mano debajo de mi muslo, como prueba de tu constante lealtad hacia mí, y no me entierres en Egipto.
30 Cuando vaya a descansar junto con mis padres, sácame de Egipto y entiérrame en su sepulcro». José respondió: «Haré lo que dices».
31 Pero su padre insistió: «Júramelo». El se lo juró, e Israel se reclinó sobre la cabecera de su lecho.
Chapter 47
1
Joseph went and told Pharaoh, «My father and my brothers have come from the land of Canaan, with their flocks and herds and everything else they own; and they are now in the region of Goshen.»
2
He then presented to Pharaoh five of his brothers whom he had selected from their full number.
3
When Pharaoh asked them what their occupation was, they answered, «We, your servants, like our ancestors, are shepherds.
4
We have come,» they continued, «in order to stay in this country, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks in the land of Canaan, so severe has the famine been there. Please, therefore, let your servants settle in the region of Goshen.»

Pharaoh said to Joseph, «They may settle in the region of Goshen; and if you know any of them to be qualified, you may put them in charge of my own livestock.» Thus, when Jacob and his sons came to Joseph in Egypt, and Pharaoh, king of Egypt, heard about it, Pharaoh said to Joseph, «Now that your father and brothers have come to you,

the land of Egypt is at your disposal; settle your father and brothers in the pick of the land.»

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh. After Jacob had paid his respects to Pharaoh,

Pharaoh asked him, «How many years have you lived?»
9
1 Jacob replied: «The years I have lived as a wayfarer amount to a hundred and thirty. Few and hard have been these years of my life, and they do not compare with the years that my ancestors lived as wayfarers.»

Then Jacob bade Pharaoh farewell and withdrew from his presence.
11
2 As Pharaoh had ordered, Joseph settled his father and brothers and gave them holdings in Egypt on the pick of the land, in the region of Rameses.
12
And Joseph sustained his father and brothers and his father’s whole household, down to the youngest, with food.
13
Since there was no food in any country because of the extreme severity of the famine, and the lands of Egypt and Canaan were languishing from hunger,
14
Joseph gathered in, as payment for the rations that were being dispensed, all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan, and he put it in Pharaoh’s palace.
15
When all the money in Egypt and Canaan was spent, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, pleading, «Give us food or we shall perish under your eyes; for our money is gone.»
16
«Since your money is gone,» replied Joseph, «give me your livestock, and I will sell you bread in return for your livestock.»
17
So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he sold them food in return for their horses, their flocks of sheep and herds of cattle, and their donkeys. Thus he got them through that year with bread in exchange for all their livestock.
18
When that year ended, they came to him in the following one and said: «We cannot hide from my lord that, with our money spent and our livestock made over to my lord, there is nothing left to put at my lord’s disposal except our bodies and our farm land.
19
Why should we and our land perish before your very eyes? Take us and our land in exchange for food, and we will become Pharaoh’s slaves and our land his property; only give us seed, that we may survive and not perish, and that our land may not turn into a waste.»
20
Thus Joseph acquired all the farm land of Egypt for Pharaoh, since with the famine too much for them to bear, every Egyptian sold his field; so the land passed over to Pharaoh,

and the people were reduced to slavery, from one end of Egypt’s territory to the other.
22
Only the priests’ lands Joseph did not take over. Since the priests had a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and lived off the allowance Pharaoh had granted them, they did not have to sell their land.

Joseph told the people: «Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh, here is your seed for sowing the land.
24
But when the harvest is in, you must give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, while you keep four-fifths as seed for your fields and as food for yourselves and your families (and as food for your children).»
25
«You have saved our lives!» they answered. «We are grateful to my lord that we can be Pharaoh’s slaves.»
26
Thus Joseph made it a law for the land in Egypt, which is still in force, that a fifth of its produce should go to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not pass over to Pharaoh.
27
Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. There they acquired property, were fertile, and increased greatly.
28
Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years; the span of his life came to a hundred and forty-seven years.
29
When the time approached for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him: «If you really wish to please me, put your hand under my thigh as a sign of your constant loyalty to me; do not let me be buried in Egypt.
30
When I lie down with my ancestors, have me taken out of Egypt and buried in their burial place.»
31
3 «I will do as you say,» he replied. But his father demanded, «Swear it to me!» So Joseph swore to him. Then Israel bowed at the head of the bed.
1 [9] Wayfarer . . . wayfarers: man is merely a sojourner on earth; cf ⇒ Psalm 39:13.
2 [11] The region of Rameses: same as the region of Goshen; see note on ⇒ Genesis 45:10. The name Rameses, however, is an anachronism, since this royal name did not come into use before the end of the fourteenth century B.C., long after the time of Joseph.
