Leyenda del Acueducto
Cuenta la leyenda que en una ocasión, hace ya muchos años, una muchacha que acarreaba un gran cántaro de agua hacia su casa exclamó: “Daría cualquier cosa porque el agua llegase sola a las puertas de la ciudad y así no tener que volver a recorrer este camino para buscarla”. Apenas pronunció estas palabras, se le apareció un refinado señor de edad indefinida y voz sibilina, preguntándole si de verdad estaba dispuesta a dar cualquier cosa para que se cumpliese su deseo. La muchacha, una vez repuesta de su impresión inicial, respondió que sí, efectivamente daría lo que fuese, y aceptó un pacto con el personaje, que no era otro que el mismo diablo: él dispondría del alma de la mujer si, antes de que cantara el gallo, el agua llegaba hasta la puerta de su casa. El caballero accedió, y tras estrechar la mano de la joven, desapareció.
Pero después, consciente de lo que había hecho, la joven rezó hasta la extenuación para evitar el presagio. Mientras tanto, una tormenta se había desatado y el demonio trabajaba a una velocidad asombrosa de un sitio a otro moviendo unos grandes bloques de piedra que apilaba formando los pilares de una estructura enorme. De pronto, el gallo cantó, pues el cielo había escuchado la plegaria de la joven y aquel día amaneció más temprano, de tal manera que el Diablo no pudo terminar su obra antes del plazo pactado por lo que debió retirarse sin el alma en prenda. La muchacha confesó su culpa ante los segovianos que, tras rociar con agua bendita los arcos, aceptaron felices el nuevo perfil de la ciudad.
Legend of the Aqueduct
The legend tells the story of a young peasant girl, who was carrying some water from the river to her house, when she started murmuring -‘I would do anything, so that the people from Segovia don’t have to carry the water to their homes ever again’- . She heard a voice from behind that said -‘Anything?’- . She was very poor, so she answer ‘yes’ to the voice. Then, a man with a goatee appeared and said – ‘Even your soul?’- The peasant girl, who was kind of unbelieving, told him – ‘I don’t need my soul’-. However, since she didn’t trust the odd little man, she imposed him one condition: – ‘But only if it occurs before the rooster begins to sing. He shook her hand and vanished instantly.
The peasant girl had started to think it has been a hallucination; but, that night, a noise similar to a thunder woke her up. When she went to the street, which was deserted as if it was under a spell, she saw the weird man surrounded by flames and moving vertiginously and lifting huge rocks. Horrified, the peasant girl realized that he was the devil, who, some hours before dawn, was walking very slowly and carrying the last stone, laughing at her. Suddenly, the rooster sang. The peasant girl, becoming aware of what she had done, started to pray. And, when she approached to her neighbors’ rooster, scared, it began to sing. The devil walked away very furious, leaving the aqueduct behind him. The inhabitants put a stone with an image of the virgin in the hollow, where the devil hadn’t put the last stone.

Есть предание, согласно которому, много лет тому назад молодая девушка, неся воду с реки к себе домой, воскликнула: «Я бы всё отдала ради того, чтобы вода текла до города, и таким образом не надо было бы всё время ходить за ней». Как только она произнесла эти слова, перед ней вдруг появился утончённый мужчина неопределённого возраста с загадочным голосом и спросил, действительно ли она была готова отдать всё, чтобы исполнилось её желание. Девушка, как только оправилась от первоначального шока, ответила, что да, что она действительно отдала бы всё, и согласилась с мужчиной, который был не кто иной, как сам дьявол, на сделку: он овладел бы душой этой девушки, если бы вода достигла дверей её дома до того, как пропел бы петух. Он согласился и, пожав ей руку, исчез.
Но потом, поняв, что она сделала, девушка молилась до изнеможения, чтобы избежать предвестия. Между тем началась гроза, а демон работал с бешеной скоростью, перемещая из одного места в другое большие каменные блоки и укладывая их один на другой, образовывая из столбов огромную структуру. Вдруг, пропел петух, так как небеса услышали молитвы девушки, и в тот день рассвело ранее, так что дьявол не мог закончить свою работу в согласованный срок. Таким образом он должен был уйти без трофея: без души девушки, признавшей потом свою вину перед жителями Сеговии, которые, после окропления арок святой водой, с радостью приняли новый вид города.
La légende de l’Aqueduc
La légende raconte qu’il était une fois, il y a longtemps, une fille qui portait une grande cruche d’eau pour l’amener chez elle a proféré : « Je donnerai n’importe quoi pour que les habitants de Segovia n’aient pas besoin d’amener l’eau chez eux ». Tout à coup, elle a écouté une voix qui lui a répondu : « Tu donnerais n’importe quoi ? » Oui, la fille lui a dit qu’elle donnerait n’importe quoi et elle a accepté un pacte avec ce personnage-là qui s’agissait, en fait, du diable : si l’eau arrivait chez elle avant que le coq chante, il posséderait l’âme de la fille. L’homme a accepté le pacte, ils se sont serrés la main et il est disparu.
Mais après, elle s’est rendue compte de ce qu’elle avait fait, donc elle a prié pour éviter le présage. Pendant ce temps, un orage a commencé et le diable continuait à travailler rapidement pour déplacer de grands blocs de pierre qui empilait pour faire une grande construction. Tout à coup, le coq a chanté, puisque le ciel avait écouté la prière de la jeune femme et le jour a commencé plus tôt. C’est la raison pour laquelle le Diable n’a pas pu finir son travail avant l’heure fixée donc il a dû se retirer sans l’âme. La jeune fille a confessé sa faute aux habitants de Segovia, qui après asperger les arcs avec de l’eau bénite ils ont accepté très heureux le nouveau profil de la ville.
